  • This church has a real and strong love for God and His Word. The Bible teaching is excellent. Christ is honored and the pastoral team strive to be the bond slaves of Christ.

I just left RWC after 3-1/2 years. I love so many of the people there. I am grateful for the many kindnesses that were extended to me. I believe it was where I needed to be for a time. However, it is missing some ingredients I find essential in a church, including much of anything connected to 2,000 years of christian tradition. Including the freedom, let alone encouragement, to use one's spiritual gifts, especially if you are female. There is a definite hierarchy, with the inner circle vs. the rest of us. I do not think that way, nor do I want to be in an environment like that (Jesus turned the hierarchy upside down, after all, and taught by example that leaders are supposed to be servants). The leadership runs Sundays slick and smooth, with perfection as the clear goal. Okay, but after awhile I hunger for a garden of believers producing a variety of edible fruit, rather than a landscape of overly manicured shrubs and lawn with all the 'weeds' plucked out (edible, nutritious 'weeds' included). I long for an environment in which each one can be themselves in Christ and relate as coinheritors of the kingdom...where various ages and types of members of the body of Christ are equally involved (in which we are all different, yet need each other!). If only it was like a family where no one is deliberately ignored. I need a church where prayer isn't a topic for bragging with little time actually spent in it. Where there is an actual phone number members can call in an emergency. Where the church operates according to God's will, not limited by fear of lawsuits. The gospel is central at RWC, as it should be, but what about the meat...the depth...the deep kind of discipleship that must continue forward following salvation if faith is going to last and weather the severe storms of life? (There is no adult education at RWC to speak of--certainly none of much depth, and it continually repeats.) Why isn't there any facilitation of communication between members? Why is reading in general and/or thinking for oneself shunned? Why is the place so comfortable for the shallow and superficial? Why is there so little humble seeking of the direction of the Holy Spirit (with the entire congregation included in the process)? Why are only upbeat emotions okay, and tears never meant to be seen? Why has musical worship become so overimportant, with the leaders congratulating themselves? (Please, River West leadership, recognize how self-satisfied you've become and seek to serve God and the rest of the congregation, not just yourselves--it is His church, and we are all equal.) If you are imperfect or unwilling to pretend to be perfect, you might find yourself uncomfortable at RWC. If you are open, genuine and vulnerable about being 'in process' you will be treated with patience and kindness for awhile, but after a bit, if you still aren't up to playing perfect, you will experience the difference. Because surface impressions matter very much there, and if you're not impressive, you are not important. I recommend finding a church where it's okay to be who you are--whether you are extra wonderful, ordinary, or in the middle of a slow and painful healing process--and where it's okay to give what you have to give, even if it doesn't fit into a preassigned box. Maybe with leadership that has more depth as well, having suffered, so that they can understand what it's like to be in pain or to have needs or to be going through something difficult or to be weak in some way, which is not a shameful thing. Being at River West has made me long to fellowship again with the humble, poor believers I have encountered in third world countries, who know they truly have nothing but Jesus, and put on no pretensions with each other. In that sense, RWC is probably not much better or worse than most churches in America who just don't get it that truly all we have as christians to distinguish us is Jesus--and since this is true for each one of us, there is no denying that none should feel proud or lord it over (or overcontrol) others.

  • I always feel I'm with family when I go to church here or attend any of the functions, scripture studies or small group weekly gatherings. The pastors are all very honest, caring and live a life strong in their desire to save the world for Christ. They love all like Christ loved all. The church is very active in the mission field locally and overseas. They team with other churches and even the Foster parent program to help there where needed. The have great class and activities for the youth to keep them active in the church and community. There are a lot of volunteers in this church which is very refreshing because that's what a caring church does. I've been going there for about 15 years and never regretted it.
